Astromodified Nikon DSLR

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've recently modified my Nikon D3100 to try and use it as a dedicated camera for AP. A bit curious as to how subs straight from the camera usually looks like as I feel that mine is very red/pink, this is fixable in post but still leaves some discoloration on the starts. Any suggestions? Is this normal?

The image is a single 30sec exposure straight out of the camera converted to jpg.

Yes that is normal... you obviously have a high amount of light pollution, and the astromodded DSLR does shift your colors toward red... as expected because its a lot more sensitive to the red spectrum.

Once you black balance the image than all of your stars and object will be a normal color.

The star discoloration is caused by either not being perfectly focused or your lens is causing chromatic abberations... this can also be fixed in post.

The image is taken at a bortle class 4 site on a very clear night with high seeing so I wouldn't say there's a lot of light pollution. When I saw the image out of the camera I was a bit worried I might have messed up but I reckon this is normal then. Thanks for your reply.
