Mars 13.10

Seriously, your picture is an inspiration. I took up astronomy perfectly in time for the last close approach of Mars, which was wrecked by the Mars global sand storm.

Now it seems Mars is perfect but I cannot see it. My goal was one view of the polar cap. If I miss it again... I have your picture to know it was possible.

Thanks for the nice words Marv..I really haven't had the best of luck weatherwise here in my part of Germany also - either too hot or more recently cloudy. It's only been in the last couple of weeks I've had cooler but clearer conditions.

Fingers crossed you get some clear conditions soon!

Hi Marv,

The polar cap is very small right now and hard to see. I just could see it yesterday (14/10) around 10pm at 270x with Skymax 180. The main problem is that the planet is too bright and your eye has trouble resolving the subtle features. I found that a filter to cut the glare really helps. I personally like the neodymium filter, but have also tried orange and light red and they made the features stand out a bit more. And Mars became very red of course...

Good luck!
