Fast moving star, what is it?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've registered on this forum to ask a question about something I've just seen (I'm not an astronomer but I have an idle interest). I've tried searching on the internet but can't seem to find any useful information, so I thought you guys would be the experts to ask!

I was out in the garden in Oxfordshire at 18:42 and noticed a star that was moving. I put my 8x binoculars on it and it looked like a star but much brighter than any of the stars it passed. It was travelling from North to South and took roughly 60 seconds to cover half the sky (I spotted it when it was a bit past overhead). It passed to the right of Orion's belt and the left of his 'foot'.

Would it be a satellite? Is it possible to know which one?

Thanks!
