Hello David

I am going to contact Celestron USA regarding your issue. Our technician does not know why there is a conflict between the GPS and the StarSense with the splitter.

I will contact them this afternoon and be in touch next week (there is a little delay in replies as the staff are working from home in California due to the current virus situation).

Got this response this morning from the Celestron team. This came after Celestron from the US asked me to run through a few procedures, which again failed. really I'm not a trouble maker😬 but it's got the big boys scratching there heads as they say.

Hello David

Many thanks for the emails - all the information you gave was very useful and my colleague at Celestron USA also thank you for this.

He is scratching his head on this one so he has now sent off all the information to the hardware/software development team and we await their response. I will be in touch as soon as I hear from them.

Hi my names Jordon.

I just registered as I am having the same issue with exactly the same set-up and have found a temporary work around until hopefully Celestron find a solution.

I know it doesn’t take long to manually enter time & location but I like to speed up the set-up process as much as possible so I can spend my precious time (have 2 young children who can wake up at any moment) on achieving precise polar alignments for astrophotography as I am on a wedge.

Now I have found it doesn’t matter how you connect the WiFi/HC/SS with or without the splitter this will work. First turn-on and go to menu/time and location/time location source and turn on Manual entry then turn off scope. Next turn on again and do the same above but turn gps accessory as the source then wait for gps fix. Now start alignment procedure and you won’t have the SS ERROR. Now your kit will work perfectly until you turn off again.

I know this isn’t perfect but you can avoid manually inputting until Celestron come up with a fix.

Hope this helps

Hi Jordan, and welcome to SGL.

That is a good find, and hopefully it might help David until Celestron come up with a fix.

I don't have GPS as I only setup in the garden.

I only had to enter my location once as it is stored in the mount, so I just enter time and date and let StarSense do it's stuff.

The only benefit I can see of using GPS is going to other sites.

Thanks for the welcome.

Your right, there isn’t much benefit for the price tag of the unit but I do intend to travel regularly out of the urban skies when we finally come out of lockdown and it provides the extra reassurance that time is precise to the second. Think it’s my OCD!

Did use SkySafari for alignment/loc/time for awhile but you will be surprised how many times my tablets internal compass came out of alignment which then screwed with the scopes Goto

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi there Jordan and welcome, been away for a while. What you have said I worked out as well, not ideal but it's OK I got an email from celestron a couple of weeks ago and there still working on. If they don't sort it then I will ask for a total refund. See what they say?

I'm using 20x80 celestron binoculars at the moment as I don't want to haul equipment late in the evening as I'm an ole boot who is getting on in years. I am impressed with them.
