Thank you for your swift response CV.  

Fortunately the problem appears to have been far more ‘straight forward’.  I had been through all obvious switch off/on scenarios as you suggested.  It transpired that because the scope etc. had been stored in a relatively cold room originally and then brought to a warm room by a hot radiator, it was a ’mechanical’ hiccup.  

Once all the screws were loosened (they had become very tight in this unusual heat) the problem was solved.   Not something found in the ‘book’.
