Strange Sighting

Hello, my name is Richard Turner and i live in the U.S.A. Many years ago while serving in the U.S. Army in the Republic of South Vietnam one morning in March of 1970 as i was preparing to go out on a convoy i looked up at the sky,  which was still dark, and i saw a bright star with a beam of light shining down from it. It wasn't an aircraft of any kind or a comet. I pointed it out to a friend who said it was called ' a hole in the sky ' which is something i never heard of. Does anyone out there know what i might have seen? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Do you know where you were, what direction you were looking in and what time?

If not I doubt we will ever know for sure but assuming no light pollution where you were could be Comet Bennett
