What ZWO Imaging Camera to buy

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I would like to purchase a dedicated imaging camera to replace my Canon 600D, my budget is about £700, this camera will be used on a Willaim Optics ZS61 then next year a William Optics ZS103.

I have looked at FLO website and seen the following models of the ZWO camera, but i know nothing about these so looking for some advice if possible on the pros and cons on the below cameras.

1) ZWO ASIMC 178 Cooled Colour

2) ZWO ASIMC 385 Cooled Colour

3) ZWO ASIMC 1600 Colour

Thanks

Whatever you get, make sure its a cooled camera if you are interested in DSOs. The main difference between the three is the sensor size. The ASI1600 is the biggest but the most expensive if you get the cooled version. The other 2 have similar sized sensors. Of those two I think the ASI385 has the edge for DSOs. ZWO also gives it the edge for planetary which I suspect is due to its higher frame rate. But if you are using shorter focal lengths the smaller pixels of the 178 may be advantageous for that.
