SW enhanced dual-axis motor drive

Just curious..are those drive motors stepper motors or synchronus ac (1/15 rpm) motors that require a sine wave voltage..Ive always wanted to develop a controller using the arduino. I have an ac synchronous motor on my old equatorial mount, so I need to generate a sine wave that I can vary the frequency of.  I used to design variable frequency drives for industrial applications..this would be a neat small scale project.
