Question about gain

So I'm playing about with different settings on my QHY8L and have come to the gain. From a bit of research on SGL it seems that most users of this camera have the gain set to around 15. An exposure of 240s at gain 15 produces this:

That seems very dark. The same exposure time but gain 60 produces this:

That seems more like it! But the gain is so much higher than expected. Can anyone explain what could be going on?

I have no experience of this camera. I think it has a well depth of 25000 e so a gain of 2 to3 should match it to a 16 bit A to D converter. If it is too dim it needs more exposure. What ADU values do you get ?
