Issue with robofocus handset - any ideas ?

Hi all

I have two robofocus handsets that are ascom connected to POTH. Recently one has stopped responding to serial commands but the handset unit still operates via the buttons.

I swapped the cables around and that did not resolve the issue so I reason that the 232 chip inside is dead and needs replacing.

Does this sound sensible and will any serial 232 level shifting chip do the job ? I have some around but don't know if they are sufficiently generic just to swap in.

Visual inspection of the circuit board has not revealed any dry or cracked joints but I would have to take the serial connector off to expose the RJ pins to check..

Thoughts appreciated

Mike
