February 15, 2016: Solar H-alpha for lunch

Skies were pretty decent today, and I managed to get the SolarMax-II 60 DS out during lunch. The first thing that struck me when I reached focus was a huge, very bright plage area near the north-western limb. It looked like it was flaring. Several dark filaments could be seen to the southwest, and a string of smaller filamets spanned the northern hemisphere. Two very nice filaproms were visible on the south-eastern limb, showing good detail, especially the one further south, near the 4 o'clock position. Well worth a look. Several students and other passers by joined in the fun.

I hope to catch some more rays around teatime, to see what that bright plage area is doing.
