Does anyone have any recommendations for astronomy / astrophysics books?

I have googled for previous topics on this forum, but I'm not interested in books which tell you when and where to find things in the sky.. I have a goto mount and can use the internet for that!  I'm more interested in the science of whats out there. I have a science degree, but dont have a big physics/maths background.. so ideally not too complicated (unless basics are explained first), but not ridiculously simple either!

Is there such a text?

"Universe" by Friedman and Kaufmann is an excellent place to start.

Maybe you could find something of interest there.

Edit : "An introduction to modern astrophysics" by Caroll/Ostlie also get good reviews.
