Best eyepieces for my scope

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a 150 mm f8 dob and wanted advice to buy a new eyepiece to add to my 10 and 25 mm plossl w Orion doubler. I am looking at a stratus 17 mm or 13 mm. Eyepiece. Would that be a good fit for my scope? Or any other suggestions for lenses or shorty Barlow.

Hi There,

Welcome to SGL. before choosing your eyepieces there are a couple of good guides to help you out one is by the Warthog :--  http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/43171-eyepieces-the-very-least-you-need/    and one by Robin Wilkey :-- http://www.swindonstargazers.com/beginners/eyepieces.htm

Also you may llike to have a look at this link, just plug in your telescope data and your eyepiece data, click on switch to visual view.  :-- http://www.12dstring.me.uk/fov.htm

At f/8 the scope should be tolerant of most eyepieces.

If sticking to plossls then look at the Vixen NPL plossl's, they are generally considered good.

Next for you is something like the Astro-Tech Paradigms at $60 each, they come in 5, 8, 12, 15, 18, 25 mm.

Then at a very similar cost are the Celestron X-Cels, they are 5, 7, 9, 12, (15 or 18) and 25mm.

If you go aiming the scope at planets then the X-Cels have the better selection at the lower focal lengths.

They are generally the first step up from the supplied.

No idea on barlows, never use one.

Hi and welcome to SGL :)

If you take the focal length and divide by the eyepiece length you get magnification. E.g. 1200 / 10mm = 120x mag. Aim for a range of magnifications between 40x to 250x initially. At the lower end of mags go for a couple of wide field eyepieces to take in larger dso's. A gap of circa 5mm between eyepiece lengths will give a useful range of 5 or 6 pieces.

You already have 10mm and 25mm so for your scope I'd suggest 5mm, 15mm, 20mm, and a wide piece around 30mm. The make and quality have been commented on by others so I hope that helps. :)
