Why is there so much stuff astronomers need?

Recommended Posts

Great thread and lots of interesting comments. I have a feeling that the real issue is differentiating between need and want, sometimes it's a very blurred line! However, there is one advantage of not getting everything you want/need that quickly and that is that it helps astronomers to make the most out of what they do have. With an 8" scope, you've got a great start.

When I started, I thought that astronomy was very much the preserve of professionally made equipment and was amazed at how much stuff people made or adapted themselves. Imagine my astonishment when I found out that a couple chaps in my astro society made their own scopes, including grinding their own lenses.

The only advice I would have to the OP is enjoy what you have and don't be in too much of a rush to gets stacks of gear, you'll find you can't take it all with you when you go off site with you scope,

Happy viewing all
