Lodestar Live - V0.12 (beta)

Hi Greg!

Thanks for the suggestions - my comments below!

1) a "gray point" histogram adjustment in addition to being able to set black and white point

Added this to the future ideas list, it won't make V0.13 or V0.14 I suspect, but certainly worth looking into! Maybe even a graphical adjustable curve.

2) look into feasibility of enabling "monochrome" mode during imaging for X2C (like what is done in Focus & Framing mode)

Already kind of in V0.13, you can display only a single (selectable) colour channel which will display as grayscale. When V0.13 is out have a play and let me know what you think.

3) would it be difficult to implement flat frame corrections similar to how you have implemented dark frames?

Nope in principal fairly easy, would need an extra mode button. This one is already on the future ideas list.

You mean a gamma correction, or "all-in-one" non-linear contrast control as in PHD ? Yes, for real-time observation that would be simpler. IMHO you only need more complete dynamic range control for off-line image treatment. ImageJ has a very complete set, with a simple graphic representation of intensity distribution.

Yes, a flat-field correction could be combined with generating a hot pixel map, which could simplify their replacement in real-time by the mean of the surrounding pixels.

Paul81,

WOW, Awesome software. Thank you for making this available and supporting it like you do. I just got my first Lodestar. I got the X2c and I have only had two chances to use it and both nights were near full moon and wispy clouds. I have got what I think are great results considering no dark skies to say the least. Thanks again...

A couple questions if I may...

I am using at the moment an Esprit 100 f5.5 with no additional focal reducer. The chip size is small as you know on the X2's. Have you given any thought of developing a routine that would allow for doing mosaics?  That would be awesome.

Is there a way to allow the sliders that are used for image stretching and color management (all sliders) to be operated via the up and down arrows or the left and right arrows on the keyboard in a way that would allow for much more precise increments?

I am currently using V.12 as well and have had no problems. Like I said I have only used it a couple times but wanted to say that it seems stable to me on my MACBOOK PRO Running Yosemite 10.10.4.

Thanks again, keep up the great work..

Hi SNR and welcome

Not sure if it helps, but on a Mac you can use the two-finger trackpad slide to get these precise changes. For me on a MacBook Air it works fine on LL.

Hi SNR,

Martin is correct - the two finger swipe on Mac works quite well for fine control. If its something folks would like I can add some keyboard controls, this is very easy to do.

Also with regards to mosaics - this is something I have been interested to look at in the future - auto mosacing. Will be a while before I can get onto that tho!

Martin, Thanks I will try that.

Paul, Thank you. Looking forward to more updates. Great work! BTW what is the projected date for V.13 release?

Paul,

Can you tell me why my histogram is really narrow and the colors red, green and blue are hard to see? I must be doing something wrong on my settings. Images look good to me but I do not see all the colors in the histogram. Thank you....

SNR,

The histogram is narrow, if the contrast setting is low. If you position the contrast slider to .50 (the middle of the range), then you should get reasonably wide histograms.

Red, green and blue added up yields white. So in the areas of the histogram, where the three colors overlap, the histogram will be white. If you see a red tail end of the histogram, that means that in the region there is red light but no green and blue.

You can see the red, green and blue histograms separately, if you check the "Display selected" checkbox. Then you can use the red, green or blue radio buttons to select the color channel, whose histogram you want to see.

Be careful when you uncheck the "Modify All" checkbox. When that checkbox is unchecked, any brightness or contrast modifications apply only to the color, whose radio button is selected. And those modifications remain in effect even after you re-check the "Modify All" checkbox or click on a different radio button. This can be confusing at the beginning. For that reason I would not recommend making modifications with the "Modify All" box unchecked until the user gains more experience. This is an "Advanced" setting best left for later.

Clear Skies!

The strength of LL is as a "real-time" stacking application; a mosaic would be something to do off-line, and powerful tools already exist for that. Just google "mosaic astronomy" or "imagej mosaic" to find links like Mosaic for astronomy and MosaicJ, an ImageJ plugin for biological (or astronomical) imaging. Creating mosaics is also a well-known technique in classical digital photography, and lots of free applications do that. Please resist the temptation to add features that are best done in post-processing with specialised applications.
