Adding Star Mask as Layer Mask in GIMP...Help please

Recommended Posts

Hope this the right forum for this!

I have created a star mask in DSS and want to add it as a Layer Mask to an Image layer in GIMP.

I created a Layer Mask, then tried to copy the contents of the star mask and paste it into the layer mask, but I get another 'floating Layer'.

Has anyone done this who can direct me how to add the star mask to the layer mask, or is there another way of using it? I want to use it so I can change the colours of galaxies whilst keeping the stars as they were.

Thanks, Tim.

p.s. Not that experienced in using layers, but happy to learn!

Thanks Steve,

Unfortunately not....   I can create a layer mask as described in the tutorial, what I want to do is use the star mask created in DSS as the layer mask, i.e copy or import the star mask into the Layer mask. I'm sure there is a simple way to do, but i am just too simple to work it out!

Cheers, Tim.

Looks at the layers help, there is a "Channel" option, which says "With this option the layer mask is initialized with a selection mask you have created before, stored in the Channel dialog.". So if you can get your mask into a channel then maybe this will work!?

Or maybe follow this http://blog.irisquest.net/2008/02/gimp-using-imagelayer-as-layer-mask_7418.html ?
