I changed the way I use my Celestron Skymaster 20x80s ...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Thought I'd post this, as it might be useful to others. I've had my 20x80s for a couple of years now, and have enjoyed them immensely. Because I don't wear glasses, I've always used them with the rubber eyecups extended, but found I had to really press my face into them to get a decent view. I always end up with indents on the sides of my nose as a result, and, after a while it's been a rather uncomfortable squeeze.

Anyway, last night I had the binoculars out for a couple of hours, and, as the eyecups were getting a bit uncomfortable, I tried them with the eyecups folded back. What a revelation! It has to be said, I feel a bit foolish for not trying this before, and although it took a little while to get used to (not having my face actually up against the eyepieces), the view was much, much better (and a much wider field of view!).

Can't imagine why i never tried this before, but now I have done, there's no going back.

Cheers,

Kev.

I always use my Celestrons (25x70) with the rubber caps down, leaving them up just leaves my eye too far away; I remove my glasses for the same reason. I also find I need to focus them slightly differently for planets and stars, turning the right eyepiece. The focus for bringing out Saturn's rings differs from that which splits Albireo cleanly, for example.
