Hi Hf86 and welcome to SGL, binoculars are an excellent way to start your observing especially if you invest in a decent tripod, a lot mores stars will become visible than you can see with the naked eye and the Moon will reveal in a little more detail its heavily cratered surface, you should be able to make out some of the larger notable features, enjoy :)

...Is summer a bad time in the UK?

I observe, and image, all year round.  The problem with the summer is that you have to accept being out at unsociable hours.  Last night I was imaging from midnight until 2:30, so by the time I got home it was 3:30.  There are only so many times you can do that when it's work the next day.
