Imaging Vesta and Ceres

I was wondering if it would be possible to image either of these asteroids. According to Stellarium, Vesta is mag 5ish and Ceres 6.7ish. So roughly the same as some dimmer stars.

Would I be better off using the DSLR on a tripod and taking some wider shots or using it on a scope and hand entering the RA and DEC on the hand controller?
