trouble imaging flares

By flares, I think you probably mean prominences, the  details that stick out from the edge. These are much fainter by comparison than the general surface so require a longer exposure. Most solar imagers take an image of both and then combine them.  :smiley:

I would guess that would be done in something like Photoshop, by either creating a mask or cutting out the main center of the sun which is all burnt out and that should leave the main colour from one image and then the prominences still showing in the other image.

What ever image software you have you can often find some good tutorials online on combining images or creating masks.
