Question about multipoint alignment...

How does mulipoint alignment work in programs such as registax? Does it align on each individual point then when stacking bring each aligned section together with some sort of feathering?

The reason I ask is I'm trying to understand why registax creates creases (like crazy paving) in the image sometimes.
