looking for info on where the best dark skies are in around west lothian scotland  prob with in an hours drive

Your best bet is to contact a club in your area, they are likely to know the best dark sites. Lots to choose from here -

Be very careful about heading off into remote places on your own, much safer and more fun in a group.

Craig, welcome to SGL

Check out the Central Scotland Observers Group, a forum based group of observers / imagers. We meet - usually at short notice -  at a few sites in the central belt, from Ayrshire through to East Lothian. The closest to you (and me) will be Harperrig, just off the A70.

As NGC 1502 says above, its better and safer out under the stars in a group. You will see more than if out on your own, we are all happy to share the views from the eyepiece - from a variety of scopes.

Google CSOG and that should point you in the right direction. Hope this helps.
