There are MANY of us who have successfully built spectroscopes (and spectrohelioscopes)

Over on the Astronomical Spectroscopy Yahoo group, in the files area you'll find details of a Classical, Littrow, MG80 and FC120 spectroscopes which can be built with basic hand tools.

("Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs", Springer has a whole section on spectroscopy design and construction)
