6" reflector advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Would like to move up from my 130p (also have a mak 127) to gather a bit more light.

I really can't afford a new mount, so limited to a 6" tube on my eq3 pro for a little while.

I like to view a variety of objects so need an all-rounder ( I know there will be compromises) , and although I really like the idea of a refractor, I think in terms of value for money - and this is a very "budget" purchase,  a reflector is the way to go.

Have seen the SW 150p

and the Altair Astro 150ss

http://www.altairastro.com/product.php?productid=16588&cat=271&page=1

To me, they look quite similar in spec and quality.  Altair seem to make a big deal of the " cnc machined" focuser.

Wondered if anyone could advise or give opinions?

Thanks

SBJ

I can't speak for the GSO but the SkyWatcher 150P-SS is a great little scope. These are both at the top end of what you want to put on an EQ3 though and not all that much of an upgrade from a 130P. I would be tempted to save a bit more and go for an Skyliner 200P Dobsonian. That really is an upgrade worth having.

Can you compare your current 130mm scope side by side with someone else's 150mm scope, and then maybe a 200mm one?

I just wonder if there will be a massive jump visually from 130 to 150, whatever the percentage increases in light gathering calculations say.

I've just bought a 150pds and would recommend it. I picked it up on astro buy and sell for 145 quid in immaculate condition. Most people tend to look after their Astro gear so don't be put off by secondhand purchases :)

Keep and eye on the classifieds on here as well as http://www.astrobuysell.com/uk/index.php and https://www.facebook.com/groups/240391446118062/

If you arnt in a rush to get one you will find one on one of them. They pop up quite often.

The focuser on the pds range is dual speed and very smooth :)

Thanks for that.  I did start out with a Dobsonian and love the simplicity, but got quite frustrated with the quality of the mount and "smoothness".  I also really want the ability to track and the convenience of goto, so would be looking to retain my eq3 pro
