Gain & brightness vs exposure time

Right,

After successfully managing to learn how to guide, I'm starting to wonder about ideal gain/brightness settings.

Of course higher gain or brightness introduces noise.

What's the difference and whereabouts would you see the optimal lower level.

Maybe I'm jumping in too fast, but I can't see anything that can get past exposure time. Gain/brightness only amplify what you have. So any noise is amplified the same amount as any signal. In this game, it's all about getting as much signal as you can and that's only achieved through exposure.

I know. But where does that leave me with my gain and brightness. Because setting both to 0 gives me a black picture...

Really confusing...
