Maxvision 24mm 2"

Hi all.

Just ordered one of these from Explore Sci, got an email today saying order complete, so hopefully it'll be in soon.

So quick question...

Was I a bit keen getting the 2" over the 1.25" for my WO ZS71?

I have a baader 8-24 zoom, but apparently this gets a bit tight at the long lengths, so I thought I'd make the most of the 2" focuser with a nice widefield EP.

The maths give nearly an extra degree of afov over the 68 Deg unit.

Just wondering if the extra money was well spent!

I'm happy with the price, just curious as to whether the real world advantage will be significant.

Incidentally, for all the talk about the Meade connection... :)

If any of you guys have ordered one of these, check the CC: field in your confirmation email...

Mine was CC'd to the European arm of a certain well-known optical instrument supplier! :D :D

Explore Scientific own Meade Europe, so it's more of an internal email CC, I reckon. Meade, during their current financial woes, have sold off various assets to raise cash and their European distribution company, was one such sale. It gets fairly confusing as ES are majority owned by JOC, who manufacture Meade's eyepieces, which gives rise to the extreme optical similarities between the ranges. Clear? :)

As to whether it's money well spent? Well, you've basically bought a Meade 5000 24mm UWA for what? £140? Even if just some of the speculation regarding the possibility of the Maxvisions being not-quite-Meades is true, they're unlikely to be £120 worse than the current UK RRP for the otherwise identical Meade.

I've bought the Maxvision 24mm SWA and have had a couple of brief solar and lunar sessions with it. I've yet to see anything that suggests these are anything other than what is implied on the ES.eu website; That being that a "manufacturer" cancelled an order and the quality to my eyes, suggests that could well be the cash-strapped Meade. Heck, I've got the ES82s which are fundamentally Meade UWAs and what I've seen of the Maxvisions so far, has prompted me to buy the 16mm SWA to plug a hole that I don't really have!

Will it add something over your zoom? Everbody is different, but I suspect you may start looking at the zoom in a new way after the Maxvision arrives....

I bought a 24mm maxvision 82 and I am pleased with it it took me a while to find out that for best results eye placement is fairly critical but once you have found the spot it's easy to find it again. i only have a couple of eyepieces but these are premium eyepieces the maxvision were about half the price but about 90% performance at this price they are good value

Cheers Russell.

Yes the whole astronomy business seems quite intertwined.. :)

I'm certain the 24mm UWA will be a good buy for the money, as soon as the clouds clear I'll have a go with it.

Once I've had a look with the zoom, as well as my Meade 4000's I will have a better idea of what suits the scope best I'm sure.

Thanks.

Simon.
