Little info to go by. If you could perhaps upload a screenshot of what you mean it may help. Sounds like you may be getting graphical corruption. In any case I would be worth updating you drivers for your graphics card if they are ancient. Giving the kind of laptop you have an specification would help. Operating system and so on. Stellarium needs at least OpenGL 1.2 support for graphics to work properly.

It is not anything like this by any chance as discussed here ?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/stellarium/+bug/1115393

Also make sure you download a stable version, not a development version that may have bugs.

That does indeed look like the same issue as in that thread where someone shows it in a screenshot

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/130366157/stellarium-000.png

If you follow that thread carefully perhaps try version 11.4 or so instead of the one you have. Make sure you remove 0.12.x beforehand) Ideally one would like the latest, but if that makes the issues go away it is at least a workaround solution for now.

Without seeing the laptop, hard for me to know exactly. Of course installing the latest drivers I would recommend in any case. Should be in add control panel -> remove programs or programs and features ( depending how yout windows 7 is setup ) .

It would get rather lengthy to explain a step by step install of graphics drivers etc. If it is one of the standard cards, like an Intel onboard graphics chip, AMD or NVidia their websites have all the info you need. if you got some manuals for the laptop may it has some info too.

Link to older 11.4 Stellarium here

You may have more success asking here in any case

http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/support?source=navbar

as it is more a software/hardware issue rather than astronomy related. Hope it works out for you.

Just an outrageous thought on my part. You could try running the program in compatibility mode but it I unlikely to fix that issue, but easy to try, who knows.

The icon stellarium created on your desktop, or in the program menus where it created an entry, right click on it. You'll get a window which has a tab called compatibility, select windows vista service pack 1 or 2, restart stellarium, see if it helps. If not, just set it back again.

a long shot :)
