PHD oddity - video freezes on calibration

Tried out a new guiding config last night, and PHD seemed to be misbehaving.

It's an SPC900 into a guidescope, with my NEQ6 connected via the handset to a serial port to my PC. Ascom drivers are installed, and I can connect and control the mount using Ascom just fine. The webcam works fine also, generating images and finding stars.

On selecting a star and clicking on the calibration button, the video stops refreshing and of course calibration fails as the stars don't move.

Anyone had this before?
