CA now I know what you mean!

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Meade 70 ETX secondhand to bring with us in the car when we go camping this summer (don't laugh). I had a quick peek through it tonight. Wow, there was serious CA around the moon. I know it wasn't an expensive scope but was surprised at the extent of the CA. I'll be using it for clusters and the obvious galaxies so should be ok , I imagine.

As an f/5 achro you could expect it.

Powering one is a pian, it has the PP3 connector meaning it is troublesome.

One plus is that the field of view is so wide that all you need to do is level the mount, level the scope and point it North as best you can then keep pressing mode and ignore the alignment. Just pick whatever to go to and it will most likely be in view. Also quicker to get going. One of the bubble levels+compass eyepiece inserts are worth getting if you don't have one, as is a flexible adjuster for the focus.

They are noisy when slewing.
