Cleaning primary mirror?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

So I recieved my first scope today (6" reflector), and I noticed there were a couple of spots on the primary mirror. Not sure if it's dust or what it is. As it's my first ever scope, I'm not sure if I really want to take it out, or if it's safe to do by myself..

Anyway, any tips?

The spots on the mirror are definitely best left alone, they won't affect the view at all.

It's normal for optics to get grubby, and until it gets very bad, no need to clean them.

When they look really grotty, well it's best to leave that alone as well

Regards, Ed.

Dont touch it.

THe primary can get so dirty it would be considered an ecosystem on its own before it's needed. Cleaning it will only wear on the coatings.

Just keep using it until it looks like a badger slept on it (in a few years), then clean it using instructions online :)
