Roads in the towns that have yet to have their lights replaced as part of the county council’s ongoing county-wide replacement programme with SSE Contracting will be converted to part-night lighting as and when they are replaced.

The county council has agreed to pursue a programme of part-night street lighting in residential areas across Dorset as part of its plans to save £57 million over three years. Part-night lighting has already been introduced to residential streets in Dorchester, Weymouth, Portland and Christchurch.

These changes will be extended to all remaining towns and villages across the county council area over the next year. Town and parish councils have been asked for their views on which streets should remain lit all night when the changes come into place.

Good news for Dorset astronomers.
