lens for canon 1100d?

Recommended Posts

Hey gang,

Decided to buy a body only Canon 1100d from a well know auction site (roughly £200).

First q.

Does anyone have a good reason why a refurbished one is a bad idea? They only have a 90 day warranty which I guess is one reason.

Second Q.

I would like a lens to go with it (£100 budget ish ), primarily for astrophotgraphy (long exposures, on motorised mount or not etc) so a wide field view I guess? Its secondary function would be to take regular day time snaps - is this dual use a reasonable expectation?

I have a budget of £400 in total but would like to pick up a large ish SD card and a remote shutter release and maybe some other bits and bobs.

Best wishes and thanks in advance :)

If it works for a week it should last years, I have a refurbished 1100D, cost £265 with a kits lens, 16 Gig SD Cards 45m/sec cost varies but on Amazon there less than £14 and a remote Control comes in under £14, Astro will require a EQ Mount....

The 1100D and 1000D are both good cameras that will last. But the thing about astro imaging is that, because they are made primarily for daytime use, they have a red filter to reduce the "red eye" effect when snapping people. This filter will block out the red end of the spectrum emitted by a lot of astro objects - notably nebulae. You will get results but the difference between filtered and unfiltered is quite remarkable. Most astro imagers have the red filter removed.

For dual use there really isn't an ideal model - lots of astro imagers have two cameras - one for daytime plus an unfiltered one for night time :)
