Help With Merging Images Please

I have been trying , without success , to merge 2 images together in PS 7. One is a short exp and the other is a long exp of M42.

I have tried to follow a set of instructions but they do not match my PS 7 at one point and I get stuck.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

The point I am stuck at is :- Its says use VIEW>NEW VIEW to open a copy of the composite. I cannot find the NEW VIEW command in PhotoShop 7

Many thanks again Ed. For the first time I have been able to do this. I have the R.Scott Ireland book of Photoshop Astronomy. From the supplied disc I used two images of M42 taken with different exposures ( originals by Rick Krejci). That should be enough to tell everyone these are not my images
