Hi Alan and welcome to the forum. For ideas on what to look at and more importantly where these objects are, why not download a free piece of planetarium software called Stellarium, you can have a look here. Its easy to use, can configure it to your precise location and has various other settings you can play around with when the clouds come in. The advance date/time is a very useful feature to see when objects will make an appearance - really useful if your view is partially obstructed by buildings and trees etc. Hope you enjoy it.
