ST80 or 50mm Guidescope

Recommended Posts

Hey guys which would be better for guiding?

The ST80 or the 50mm guidescope from Orion, on £15 difference between the 2 really, any thoughts welcomed.

I was going to have a bash at using a webcam as a guide scope, if that fails then ill get something more adept, but in the 1st instance any input on a scope would be great :)

Many thanks!

For small setups the finder guiders do seem to work but the ST80 is more futureproofed. If space/portability is not an issue I'd go for the ST80 myself. In fact I did go for it since I have two on the go! If you aim to try a webcam go for the 80.

So i guess then that it boils down to:

a) mount capacity

:) aperture

So, out of the 2, which would be better on an EQ5 with a starwave 80? i pressume the little 50mm?

If you are using an EQ5 weight will be the issue, I would try with a Finder Guider style first, if you already have a 9x50 that can be adapted to take a webcam, some forum members have had success with that approach.

I dont, been trying to find 1 and the price difference is only £10-15 so thought id go with the orion 50mm in that case since its got a 'guidescope setup' as such :)

I did think weight would be the issue for such a small mount as well :)

Thanks again guys!
