Ever seen the movie 'Moon'? In that scenario they were mining helium three as a never ending source of energy for folks living on earth. The twist comes when the (only) operative is injured and he finds himself deposited in the infirmary.

I won't spoil it for those yet to see it, bit does address the dangers of humans living away from earth for long periods.
