Heavy DSLRs and focus on 80 APo refractor issues

Recommended Posts

I have a nikon d2x and a w.o zenithstar 80 and am having trouble with focussing. Whilst the focuser on the ota is a lovely piece of engineering it can't cope with the weight of the camera. If I'm pointed more than 30 above the horizon the focus tube slips out and down, and the geared focusser will not pull the mass back up. Any tricks out there?

There is a focus lock, but no use if you are retracting focus...

You could try an extension tube on the back of the focusser so the tube isn't hanging out as far. I don't think you can get away without using the focus lock and putting heavy stuff on, I certainly can't :D

The crayfords are a bit pants, I've had the one of my ED80 to bits several times due to it's random slipping events.

Get your camera tied on somehow to the mount or scope so when the tube does pop out the expensive tinkle can be avoided.
