False colour images

I notice there was a long thread (now closed) about false colour images. I haven't read through all the pages of posts, but just wanted to mention that false-colour images are completely standard in astronomy, for good scientific reasons. A typical and well known example is the Hubble "Pillars of Creation" image, in which the emission wavelengths of hydrogen, sulphur and oxygen are represented by green, red and blue.
