Focus dslr

I'm useing a 0.8x reducer in my 102 Vixen and trying to reach focus with a canon 350d, unfortunately it's exactly the clear night predicted here in Stoke, but between the clouds i'm trying to get focus!

i managed to get focus on a daylight object (trees about 500yds away, i assumed i'd get focus on stars just as easily.

should this be the case or am i likely to need an extention?
