  1. Hi all, it’s been a while since I’ve posted, travel and weather all conspired against me! so I’ve decided that I might go smaller on my imaging rig....that means losing the eq8 losing the Tak...and the Berlich tripod for something portable.. so what’s the best small mount out there? will it take say a 60mm Tak..guider and QSI camera? Ray
  2. Hi all, i need a little help here.... im trying to process the Cave nebula complex...its wide field, Reduced FSQ106, QSI 583.. i know the data is good..and im not an expert but neither am i a novice but im really struggling to get this subject right... ive tried Pixel math in various combinations...ive tried Images plus...ive tried PS and Hue saturation and clipping masks but i just cannot get the seperation of O111 Sii and HA correct.... or lets say as i want it!! is this target just plain difficult or what!!...i have 12 x 20mins of HA and 30 odd each of Sii and O111all 20min subs...enough i would have thought... any suggestions would be appreiciated but please please dot tell me to get more data...im fed up now....lol!!! Ray
  3. Hi all, indeed it was so easy to convert, I had some 2 years ago tried a brief foray into using my qhy5Lii on the QSI but abandoned it.....why oh why did I do that? The Caméra was actually very close to focus and with the longer fl....Tak reduced to F/3.8...it has improved the accuracy of my guiding.... the out of focus Lum filter is still used for auto focus and SGpro allows me to pause guiding during focus routines! Ray
  4. Thanks all for the replies...it is correct to say the prism is in front of the filters, however; when the filter is changed, the focuser offset means that the focuser May travel in...or out...and it’s thisaspect that changes the guide scope focus! ive fitted it for a trial tonight...I’ll set it up when thescope is infocus for the ha filter, the Astrodons I have are not perfectly par focal, but close enough...it’s the Lum filter that I use for focusing that might be the issue.....if focus is out by a good margin on the lum, it won’t matter...but yes...I agree...pause guiding during auto focus...if it actually works in sgpro!,, thanks again all Ray
  5. Hello all, can I ask if anyone uses a Qsi wsg camera off axis? ive had my 583 for years and always used a guide scope...I’m considering putting my qhy 5Lii mono in the guide port but I’m wondering how my filters will effect focus when I change between narrow band and lum for focus routines anyone knowledge of this? Ray
  6. I’m very glad you did know this one..lol...and thanks for replying. Ray
  7. Hi all, I’m helping a friend out tomorrow with her EQ3 pro, she wants t guide with it...o.k. No worries....limitations with this mount but it’s a start! so..my question is can the EQ3 pro use the eqdirect cable......??......I can lend her my ftdi cable is it can. Ray
  8. Hi all, been a while since I’ve posted! Ive not done much imaging lately, the weather for me has been the biggest hurdle, however; I’m of to Spain for a few weeks in February and I plan to take a Coronado PST and a tripod... i plan to use my guide camera the QHY5-Lii mono for imaging and a 4x Barlow... I’ve not done much solar imaging so I need a little advise on the kit I’m planning to use...i.e. is it good enough, is f40 going to get me close up (I’m assuming it will) what software would you recommend and what frame rate is achievable? i have an opportunity to purchase used Imaging source DMK 21AU618.AS MONO camera.....would this be better than the qhy5-Lii? Ray
  9. It’s a great idea in principle, I’ve been doin* it for some time, however in the uk; it’s really fraught with difficult our weather doesn’t lend self to long subs, our average seeing is pants due to the moisture that lingers so good conditions are rare. but...it is worth it and I’ll continue to do it, you just have to have patience and don’t get eager to accept subs that just aren’t good enough because they are long. thats a great sub and well done. Ray
  10. I have just completed a 4 pane mosaic with friend and we found it very difficult, in mainly due to the uneven background, so the 1s answer to the question is to try, insofar as you can to balance the backgrounds of the two halfs. the next thing is to try and separate the stars from the nebula or whatever is in your image...pixinsight does this well and so does Stratton software. but then you have to recombine...not easy to do. but the short answer to the question you ask is: for us, we used pixinsight, Stratton, photoshop CS5/6 and Images pus software..
  11. After 10 weeks of capture, 101 hours of data, 2 EQ 8's.... 2 Takahashi FSQ106 Ed's... 2 different CCD cameras with different filters, we have finally together IC 405 (Flame Nebula) NGC 1893 & IC 410 Tadpole Nebula...after 30 hours of processing for a difficult target. 12. Hi all, I've had a USB cable fail, can anyone recommend a good USB over Cat 5 option...I need about 30 mtrs coverage Ray
  13. O.k folks cheers for the replies, I have got pause guiding ticked so to speak, but it doesn't work for me! Odd....I'll recheck it out.. yes it is the focus I bother about, my offset is quite large between the Astronomik lum filter and my 3 nm Astrodons. Ray
  14. I'm currently guiding using a guide scope, quite successful I might add.. but...I'm looking at guiding with longer focal lengths and off course off axis wins out here, I use a QSI 583 wsg so it has the off axis capability and with my qhy5L-ii mono it's a good system potentially. What prevents me from switching over completely to off axis is the filter offsets between my Astrodon nb filters and my astronomik lum filter... my question is: how do imagers find the issue of offsets in off axis guiding? i generally only use my lum filter for plate solving and focusing so that's not a major issue, but Sgpro doesn't yet allow me to pause guiding during focus etc Ray
  15. The 3nm are good to be sure, however..signal can be very very weak, I've run 20 x 20 mins on a target recently without much to show for it, be prepared to take long and lots of subs. Ray
  16. The best place to calibrate is Dec zero, just east of the meridian....you need to set up the phd2 parameters to give you 12 to 15 moves west and the same north, East moves and South moves are not part of the calibration process, they are just returning the star to the star position. if yo get a good calibration at Dec zero or thereabouts, you don't need another one, I use mine I did several months ago irrespective of my target position, phd2,compensates for declination changes if the calibration is good. Ray
  17. I'd go along with this suggestion, pa must be quite a way off....unless....you have severe Flexure of the guide scope. Which can happen with the heavier guide scopes. Ray
  18. It's not for the EQ8, it's a project I'm into, I have a worm wheel but the worm bearing journal has worn, so I thought I'd try to get a high precision worm made! Ray
  19. Hi all, has anyone had a precision worm made for a mount Im looking for a company in the U.K that can provide a one off? Ray
