Orion st or Sw ST80 dovetail

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Im thinking of either the orion or the sw st 80 I,ll be buying

guide rings seperately, do I need a particular dovetail to

mount to my ED80 or the ADM vixen dual bar if I decide to go down that route.

Thankyou BigBlueOne.

Be careful about buying guide rings for your ST80 as these can be a source of differential flexure. It is not a requirement for the guide telescope and imaging telescope to point in exactly the same direction and there will be plenty of scope (oops pun!) for finding suitable guide stars using an ST80. The standard SW dovetail bar is fine for an ST80 as it is a very light 'scope.

Are you using this as a guidescope? You mention guide rings. In my experience guide rings are not needed because with the fast ST80 a half way decent guide cam will find a star 'just like that.' Guide rings are expensive and prone to flexure. I have never used them.

Sorry, Steve, crossed in the post but we agree.

Thankyou Guys,

So forget how its done with my 9x50 aligning both to a certain object

is this because Im guiding with the st80 so I dont really need to be

aligned only so long as its in the fov the guiding star that is.

Thankyou BigBlueOne.
