114mm short tube f1000

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My Skywatcher Skyhawk has an additional lens at the end of the focuser to double the focal length of the short tube to F1000.

Would it be be better to remove the lens, is it even possible, and use a decent 2x or 3x Barlow instead? The reviews I have read say that the lens used is not really up to the job? Would this arrangement give me better views? Anybody tried this?

I don't think it will work. The lens in the focuser is not a barlow lens but a corrector Jones-Bird lens (google "Jones-Bird Newtonian telescope" for an explanation) which corrects for spherical abberation. The primary mirror has a focal length of 1000mm and the lens corrects for this aswell, compressing the telescope tube down to a short length.
