2011dh - Why you should never delete your subs.

While I was away in Devon a couple of weeks ago I ran out of disk space on my laptop so deleted all my subs and just kept the final images.

I was so busy playing with my new Equinox 66 scope (that I got on 1st June) rather than phaffing about with camera lenses that I didn't even notice !!

What an idiot !! :)

I'd stacked the later session together with the first as well so can't tell if it 'occurred' whilst imaging. I'd not even unpacked my laptop from the trip until now having already uploaded the decent images I got to the web. After getting the Equinox 66 I didn't consider this to be 'decent' and it's just been sitting there for 2 weeks.

I've sent the image to the Palomar Transient Factory here anyway -

Supernovae 2011dh in M51

Still, regardless of the lack of scientific quality to the data, I'm pretty chuffed to have actually bagged it on the day of discovery. :)

That is a real shame, those subs could have real scientific vale. As Levis said, try a file recovery program.

FYI:

***************************

The message below was issued 2011 June 7 as AAVSO Special Notice #243. It is also being distributed to the AAVSO discussion and photometry groups in order to reach the widest audience possible.

Iair Arcavi and Avishay Gal-Yam (on behalf of the Palomar Transient

Factory) write:

"[The discovery of SN 2011dh in M51] (see AAVSO Special Notices

#241 (AAVSO Special Notice #241 | AAVSO) and

#242 (AAVSO Special Notice #242 | AAVSO)) is a very

exciting scientific discovery, to which amateurs can further

significantly contribute! We at the Palomar Transient Factory seek

more image data of M51 obtained between May 30 and June 2, 2011.

So, if you have imaged this galaxy using a telescope and a digital

camera, your data may be very useful to this project!

"Helpful data would be:

- images of M51 between 2011 May 30 and June 2

- only if it has an accurate time stamp

"In case such data exist, please send the raw images, specify the

filter(s) used, and if possible also send images of the same field

taken with the same instrument and telescope before May 30, to:

ptf11eon@gmail.com

"Your help could be crucial for great scientific discoveries! We

will not use any data without permission, and will of course credit

all useful images. Many thanks."

Coordinates of M51 (NGC 5194): RA 13 29 52.698 Dec +47 11 42.93 (J2000.0)

Chris

I tried the PhotoRec recovery software and found over 250,000 deleted files !! Unfortunately, most were from upgrading the laptop to OSX 10.6 the week before and the few .fits I did find were corrupted and wouldn't open.

On the plus side, I got an email back from PTF asking if I'd like to be included in the paper on 2011dh !! :)

Looking at how many reference links they have accumulated, they are interested in all images of 2011dh, even current ones.

There have been a lot posted up on here so it's probably worth dropping them a mail if you've imaged the supernova in the last couple of weeks to send them your pictures.
