Ilkeston & District AS - Late Spring Astronomy Open Day - Saturday June 11th 2011

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

As part of our 30th birthday celebrations the Ilkeston & District AS are holding its late Spring Astronomy Open Day at the Visitor Centre, Shipley Country Park, Slack Lane, Heanor, Derbyshire, on Saturday June 11th. Doors open from 9:30am until around 4pm.

We will have a selection of member’s telescopes on show, along with several automated powerpoint presentations going on throughout the day. We also hope to do some solar observing in the Centre’s Courtyard – though this is weather permitting! The Metcheck website is currently showing a reasonable day, so fingers crossed. :)

These types of events are a pretty informal affair, and members will be on hand to chat about astronomy and give advice. If anyone has a problem with their telescope, then this is a really great opportunity to bring it along to get some hands-on help and advice.

If you cannot come along on Saturday, then if you are interested our static display of member’s work (documenting 30 years of the Society) is currently on show at the Visitor Centre until Friday June 17th.

Regards

Hi Red Dwalf,

Hope you can come along. Should be a good day, and hopefully members will be able to do some solar observing during the event. Metcheck is currently showing sunny weather in the morning, then showers for the afternoon, so we may be doing some dodging with the clouds.

I think one of our guys is bringing along his Lunt 60mm solarscope, while another is bringing an 80mm refractor with a white light filter – not sure if this will be used for visual views or if it will be hooked up to a webcam/laptop to give “safe” solar images. As the Sun has been fairly active recently it will be interesting to see what can be seen.

Regards
