  1. I just added a 40mm plossl for this reason as previously i was maxing out with my 32mm. Being a relative newcomer to astronomy, i think that the entire question of exit pupil is overlooked by most beginners
  2. I have an 8” Dobsonian and a 127 Maksutov. I read about the different types and bought a 1.25” UHC. I was going to buy the Baader Neodymium, is that the LP filter that you mentioned? or is the moon and sky glow different. Finally is the Baader contrast booster called the same?. Sorry for all the questions
  3. What’s the general consensus on filters as an aid to visual astronomy?.As I’ve fairly recently resumed my astronomical journey ,with my previous foray being many years prior. There seems to be a filter for all occasions. Light pollution, contrast, nebula etc. Are these worth looking at?, or are they just a gimmick?
  4. I just measured the back of my 127 and it’s 45mm, so an adapter is required. I do like the way you have organized the fittings with the Baader diagonal and manual filter wheel. I was going to get a filter tray, but thinking about it the wheel is a much better idea. I also am constantly changing the EP position so I may very well adopt the approach you have taken.
  5. I know that the attention is mainly on back focus but this guy on YouTube uses the SVbony 105 & 205 and he highlights the following problems he encountered https://youtu.be/IZJV7a9rAaU
  6. Thanks for that Andrew, and I think that answers all the questions and doubts that may arise when shopping for these and other optically duplicated eyepieces
  7. Whilst I wholeheartedly disagree about copying other designs SVbony are not actually copying anything. They are simply buying the eyepieces from the factory of manufacture, who sells them to anyone with enough money. Whilst I sympathize with APM I cant help wonder why they didn’t license or patent their design
  8. According to the thread on CN they are in fact optically identical. However as you say, it would be great to put this to the test
  9. Thanks for that. It was very enlightening, if somewhat political. It just shows what sort of mark up companies put on the equipment. I may dip my toes in and buy a 10mm. I don’t see the 18mm anywhere
  10. Thanks for your feedback on your experience using the eyepiece. I’ll pass on them as for the price they are asking for them in some of the sizes i could buy three BST’s
  11. Thanks for the heads up and I’ll look them up to see what they are like as I’ve never tried them
  12. Are these Celestron eyepieces another copy of an existing eyepiece?. The Ultima Duo’s were apparently just repackaged Hyperion eyepieces. My understanding is that they are relatively new. Has anyone had any experience of these or of the eyepiece that they are repackaged from? Thanks
  13. Hi 👋 and welcome to SGL. I would definitely point you to the 8” Dobsonian (200mm) The Skywatcher 8” Dobsonian are in stock at the moment at First Light Optics (FLO) and meets your budget of being under £400. I would advise against observing out your window as your garden is much more suitable. Good luck in your endeavors
  14. Hi 👋 and a warm welcome to SGL
  15. Yes it’s definitely an old style Skywatcher 6” refractor (150mm) and as previously stated from the Evostar range. The scope needs a lot of TLC to bring it back to being useable. The big lens in the front of the telescope is the most important part, and it’s condition is crucial. If the scope was stored somewhere damp then this can badly compromise the lens. Take the black cover off the front to get a look at the objective lens. Until the condition of the objective lens is determined it’s not clear of the best way forward

    Hello there.

Hi Paul👋 ,welcome to the lounge
  17. No i wasn’t talking about your telescope. I was simply referring to FLO’s post where he stated that R&P is more suited to astrophotography whereas the Crayford is liked by visual astronomers.I’m sorry if you thought it was referring to you
  18. What is the favored exit pupil?. I’ve heard so many opinions. The ideal i was told to aim for is 2 for DSO’s and down to as low as 0.5-1 for planets etc. Is there an upper limit over which the image will degrade? Sorry for all the questions
  19. The only load I put on my Dobsonian focuser is the eyepiece as it’s a strictly visual affair. If I was selecting a telescope for astrophotography then I would go for the R&P design. It’s the old saying “ Horses for courses “.
  20. Wow! Improvisation and ingenuity at their best. I love it. I’ll be thinking about this each time I wheel my own Dobsonian out for a viewing session. PS:- Is that a Baader and BST EP’s hitching a ride under the OTA?
  21. R&P simply stands for rack and pinion and even little plastic focusers on cheap telescopes are in fact R&P focusers. Just saying
