We had a very busy day at the Stargazing Live event of Oxford University yesterday (12th January 2013). Got lucky with the clouds, too! Jupiter punched through thin cloud from 7pm onwards so many people got the chance to see 3 Jovian belts and all 4 moons in the old 8-inch Meade SCT.

I caught a very brief glimpse of the Transit of Venus this morning. Only about a third of the Sun was visible, a horizontal stripe bounded by clouds. The planet was seen (through filtered 10x50 binoculars) to be close to the limb of the Sun, closer than a Venus diameter, at around the 1 o'clock position (with 12 at zenith).
