  1. Coin cell batteries have a really high internal resistance that is generally close to the forward voltage of an LED. I don't think the designers of the illuminator took this into account so the resistor they added is WAY too big. I added a jumper wire across it without having to solder to the side or back. If you are not experienced with soldering just getting a blob of solder across the resister would suffice. MUCH brighter now and can't wait for a clear night to try it out.
