  1. Take the eyepiece out and look through the diagonal (in the telescope) from a few inches away in daylight, and aim at something a hundred metres away or so. You should see a rough view of the distant object. It might not be in focus, but it will let you know you're in the right direction and aiming at something other than clouds. Then put your biggest (focal length) eyepiece in and have another go at focusing, all the way from one end to the other. It's a long boring drive! At some point you should get a rough focus that then can be sharpened by moving slower.

Don't have it tracking as that might move you off target.

  2. I have a 6.3 f/r for my c9.25 and rarely use it for visual. It's nice on the bigger objects, but the effort to swap it in and out (including the significant refocusing) means I don't often bother to be honest.  For a wider field of view, a 2" 30 or 40mm eyepiece works just as well.  It's the least used accessory I have.

  3. Welcome aboard SGL Joseph and Katherine, good to have you with us.

What a beautiful place to live and excellent skies to start your journey into astronomy. In such pristine skies it can be as difficult to find your way around as it can in poor skies, due to the overwhelming number of visible stars, but I'd be quite happy to have that "problem" myself 🙂

I'm sure you'll find out that SGL is one of the most friendly and helpful astronomy sites there is, and that there's no such thing as a silly question on here. So feel free to join in on the site and get stuck into this amazing hobby. Hopefully you'll find it as fascinating as most of us do.

  4. Meet the team!

It's taken me a couple of years to get my dream team together, but here they are at last, completed with todays delivery from FLO of a little squat Pentax XW 20. Ordered on Friday, postie actually tried delivering on Saturday when the office was closed, but came back today with my goodies. Many thanks to both for a lightening fast delivery.

I bought the 20, 14 & 7 from FLO (two with the 20% discount), and the other three courtesy of three very fine chaps on here. Thanks very much, they are being looked after.

It sometimes seems a bit extravagant to spend so much on eyepieces, but I consider these as "keep for life", and as I'm in the run-up to pension age I'll probably not be able to afford them in the future. My wife is happy with me getting something that works without strain with my ageing eyes. 😍

There are a couple of other EPs in the XW range, but the 30mm is too close to my 40mm, and the 3.5mm too powerful for regular use on my scopes. For those rare nights of excellent seeing, or tricky doubles, I'm happy to barlow the 7mm or 5mm XW.

Arrived yesterday, and amazingly was able to try it successfully last night (albeit briefly)… Neewer carbon fibre jib arm camera crane… to use as binocular mount, as discussed in this thread 👍

Very nice rig.  Good choice of bins too, I love mine.

  6. Welcome aboard SGL. Good to have you with us.

Lots of choices, although stocks are limited at the moment across the board. Cajen2 asked some good questions which will help people narrow it down. I'd also ask what the skies are like where you're likely to observe?  Is it inner city back garden, dark countryside, or somewhere in between?
