Hale-Bopp is the only comet that I’ve seen naked eye. I wasn’t into astronomy back then, but even in a light polluted areas it was clear, with a tail, like drawings and paintings of comets I’d seen. You couldn’t miss it.

So far I can remember Comet Wirtanen as just naked eye visible. Neowise was clearly visible by eye, and I could just about see 12P Pons- Brooks at the end of March.

Comets are fascinating and scary too.

Just came in from a short (30 mins) observation of the nice triangle: thin crescent moon - Jupiter - comet Pons-Brooks. The APM 16x70 MS ED gave crisp views in the clear evening sky; Moon and Jupiter fitting in the same field of view (4.1°). A tad to the W, the comet's coma and star-like false nucleus came into view. Brightness of the coma around 5.0 (a tad brighter than the defocussed Pi Ari (5.3 mag) close by). Tail visible for 15-20 arc min, but several times, especially during moving the tripod-mounted binos, even longer in averted vision, up to 1.5°(?). Three totally different objects of the solar system, almost in the same field of view; fascinating.

  3. The skies were a bit "mucky" in East Anglia yesterday evening (Monday 1st April).

Just to see what happened I tried to pick up comet 12P with my phone, It wasn't great but it shows in the photos.

Tonight had had another chance. Again weather was not quite cooperative. First I had to wait for the clouds to disappear, then, 10 minutes after imaging started, fog started to form. Luckily my observatory is 7 metres above ground level, so not too much issue there for the first five minutes, but it kept me from shooting luminance. Same processing as above. The bright star is Hamal.

  5. Awful news

I really enjoyed his vlogs , and WITNS on YouTube.

He did come across as slightly thin/frail at times.

He lived for his passion of the night sky.

    RIP Alyn
