  1. Use an IR/UV cut. The ZWO cameras are sensitive well into the IR and this is brought to a different focus compared to the visible spectrum. You will get a sharper image with the IR cut filter.

However for the sharpest image use a IR pass even with the colour camera. It only lets the IR through. IR is less affected by the seeing conditions so results in a sharper but B&W image. (well its sort of purple until desaturated)

  2. The seeing Gods were smiling last night and I had my best views of Mars so far this opposition and consequently my best Mars image ever at 42 degrees altitude.

Lots of detail visible in the equatorial regions from Sinus Meridiani through Chryse to Aurorae Sinus. The blue mist on the bright limb that I saw on screen early in the session did not really show up after processing for some reason.

The next few months should give some great viewing of Mars, looking forward to it, weather permitting. It's been a while since we had a decent planetary view from the UK.

  3. Hi Geoff

Great image, well done. Also interesting discussion re ADC and exposure times. I tend to use around 10mS exposures with the ZWO  224MC colour camera. With a small RO!, I get 140 fps on Mars at f/22 on the C14. Of course you still need the ADC with a colour camera even at 40 degrees. I always collimate on screen so the whole image train is included in the adjustments.

    Best regards
